Italy Under 19, good first: Baldanzi and Volpato break down the Romanian wall

Italy made their debut in the competition with a convincing 2-1, despite the great saves of the Romanian goalkeeper

Tommaso Baldanzi and Cristian Volpato have already tasted Serie A: one of the two, the little boy who arrived from Australia, also scored at the Olimpico in Rome-Verona. In Dunajska Streda, Slovakia, thousands of kilometers from Camperdown (suburb of Sydney, where he was born), Cristian scored the decisive goal (that of 2-1) in Italy’s debut match in the Under 19 European Championship , the one against Romania, unlocked by a magic of the Empoli attacking midfielder who had experienced the thrill of his debut on the last day of the championship. Baldanzi had been deployed in place of the Juventus player Fabio Miretti, who had to serve a residual disqualification from the qualifying phase and who will return to the field on Tuesday against the hosts of Slovakia, who lost 5-0 against France in their debut (brace for Bonny, Parma player). On the social networks of the National team, however, the good luck of Gnonto and Scalvini had arrived, the other 2003 who would have wanted to take part in the European Championship won also thanks to their contribution but that the respective clubs (Zurich and Atalanta) have not released. .

Deployed with the 4-3-1-2 and with the Empolese Baldanzi behind Nasti and Ambrosino, Italy pitched the tent in the Romanian half for the entire first half, without however being able to score also and above all for thanks to the Romanian goalkeeper (and captain) Popa. The first save came on the right on Ambrosino’s near post, the second on Fabbian’s header from Giovane’s side free kick, the third (the most difficult) on Nasti who had requested and obtained a triangulation from Fabbian himself. In the middle there was also an opportunity for Radaslavescu (right out with Desplanches on the trajectory) and a joint rejection by the Milan goalkeeper and Coppola in a crash on Andronache’s attempt.

The second half started with the fireworks. Italy took the lead after less than two minutes with a splendid goal from Baldanzi, a natural left-handed but returned to the right (fake on Danuleasa) before throwing an unstoppable blow to Popa with his weaker foot. Romania, however, with the first shot in the mirror of the goal (that of the new entrant Andrei), they built the equalizer scored by Andronache on the crossbar. A goal, that of 1-1, which did not disunite Italy: Nasti, with a very narrow diagonal after Popa’s save against Ambrosino, touched the target, then it was Fabbian who again committed the Romanian goalkeeper, also attentive at 62 ‘on Ambrosino. A few minutes earlier Volpato had entered in place of Baldanzi: the boy who arrived from Australia needed 10 to bring Italy back to the lead in the 68th minute, pushing a ball into the goal that Nasti had recovered in the area after hitting the post. Nunziata covered himself with Turicchia in place of Ambrosino, but in the end there was no need to make the barricades.
