As in the first session, Max Verstappen set the fastest time in the second free practice session of the Canadian Grand Prix ahead of Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr.

Max Verstappen continues to lead the way in Montreal. Author of the best time in the first free practice session of the Grand Prix du Canada, the championship leader did it again during the second hour of running on the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. However, the difference with the competition is not obvious, both on a flying lap and on long stints. With his best lap in 1’14”127, Max Verstappen is ahead of Charles Leclerc by only 81 thousandths of a second, the Monegasque losing all the lead built up in the first two sectors in the third, essentially made up of the straight line going up towards the pits. Second in the early afternoon Canadian time, Carlos Sainz Jr has fallen behind his leader and concedes 225 thousandths in the best time. If Fernando Alonso was the spoilsport at the start of the weekend, it was Sebastian Vettel who played this role during this second session, three tenths behind Max Verstappen.

Alpine in the game with Red Bull Racing and Ferrari?

The Asturian, meanwhile, takes fifth place at four tenths of a second but the Alpine seems to shine on the long stints. Indeed, according to the lap times achieved with a higher fuel load, the Alpine is very close to the benchmarks of Red Bull Racing and Ferrari. Pierre Gasly, for his part, set the sixth fastest time at three quarters of a second, ahead of George Russell, who saved Mercedes again. In effect, Lewis Hamilton couldn’t do better than 13th and pointedly complained about the undriveability of his car. Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo, meanwhile, are ahead of Esteban Ocon, who completes the Top 10 of this session. As Max Verstappen parades to the top of the timesheet, Sergio Pérez was unable to put everything together on his qualifying simulation, with a wheel lock and a straight. As a result, the Mexican couldn’t do better than 11th. A session that also saw Valtteri Bottas unable to complete a single timed lap, betrayed by the mechanics of his Alfa Romeo. This second session was mainly concluded under an increasingly threatening skythe rain inviting itself a few minutes after the checkered flag.
