Bagnaia faster than ever

With a new circuit record in the furnace of the Sachsenring, Francesco Bagnaia dominated the first day of free practice at the German Grand Prix. Johann Zarco and Fabio Quartararo, in view in the morning, secured a place in the Top 10.

Francesco Bagnaia intends to catch up at the Sachsenring. Forced to retire in Barcelona after being grounded by Takaaki Nakagami, the leader of the official Ducati team dominated the first day of free practice at the German Grand Prix. Already comfortable in the morning, with the second time at fifteen thousandths of a second from his teammate Jack Miller, the 2021 vice-world champion raised his voice on the overheated track in Saxony. With a best lap of 1’20”018, “Pecco” Bagnaia took almost two tenths of a second off the circuit record, held since 2019 by site manager Marc Marquez. The Italian takes a Ducati hat-trick as Luca Marini and Jack Miller are less than two tenths of a second from the day’s time reference. After his error in the Catalan Grand Prix, Aleix Espargaro climbed to fourth place by 201 thousandths of a second on the handlebars of his Aprilia.

Zarco and Quartararo placed

On a very short course (3.671km) which looks like a turnstile, the gaps are reduced with 17 drivers in less than a second. Placed just behind the two official Ducati riders during the first free practice session, Johann Zarco and Fabio Quartararo were less visible in the afternoon. The Pramac driver could not do better than the fifth fastest time, a quarter of a second behind Francesco Bagnaia and just ahead of his teammate Jorge Martin. “El Diablo”, meanwhile, worked hard on the hard tires at the start of the session before attacking the clock in the final minutes. The leader of the world championship and winner in Catalonia is content with the seventh time, almost four tenths of a second behind the reference, but will have room to improve this Saturday morning, with the temperatures still expected to rise a notch. It should be noted that all the riders improved between the morning and the afternoon except Andrea Dovizioso, penultimate and in difficulty on the Yamaha of the RNF team.
