The spectacle of the 1000 Miglia 2022, Alfa Romeo protagonist

As every year, the historical re-enactment of the “most beautiful race in the world”, as Enzo Ferrari defined it, is proposed again. 440 cars take part, including some very rare Alfa Romeos, about twenty Ferraris and several racing Maseratis. At the start also three Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing

The Garage is obtained from an ancient barchessa (the shed under which hay and wheat were kept, ed) peasant in the Veronese countryside. The doors open and inside the horses look quite different from those we are used to seeing in these parts. Rossi, a little faded by time, but with a great desire to gallop in the four long stages of this 1000 Miglia 2022: they are the 1932 Alfa Romeo 8 C 2300 Spyder Le Mans and the 1936 8C 2900 Botticella, ready to face the hardest challenge for these vintage cars. The older of the two, witnessing a glorious 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1932, is that of our Gazzetta Motori crew: from 1931 to 1934, a total of 188 8C 2300s were produced, but there are nine in this version. “Le Mans”.

THE HISTORY OF THE 8C 2300 LE MANS

The powerful eight-cylinder in-line engine of this 8C was wanted by the top Alfa Romeo to equip even more luxurious and performing cars of the 6C family. And thanks to the engineer in charge of the design office, Vittorio Jano, 1931 made its debut the new model destined to make history. The twin-block, twin-shaft engine was very sophisticated, equipped with a light alloy head, a carburetor and a volumetric lobe compressor, distributor ignition and forced lubrication. With the increase in cylinders from 6 to 8, the displacement reached 2336 cc and the more performing “Spider Corsa” version developed 155 hp. Our crew, the following year, developed for Le Mans, instead has 180 horses available. A car with an incredible sporting record, from the victory at the Targa Florio in 1931 with Tazio Nuvolari, to the triumph of Campari and Nuvolari at the Italian GP in Monza, a few months later, with two consecutive victories at the Mille Miglia in 1932 and 1933. And then the dream of every car manufacturer, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, for which Alfa Romeo prepares a racing car to long wheelbase with four seats and a racing torpedo body, made by the Touring of Milan, weighing about 1000 kg, which reaches 200 km / h. The names of the most prestigious crews remain on the bodywork, from the English Lord Howe and Sir Henry Birkin in 1932 to Italo Balbo in 1933, the only Italian flag affixed to the 8C. Indeed no, because now we are here too, with our names to remember this 1000 Miglia of Gazzetta Motori. In the race we will use a new “ecological” fuel Ecomaxx, specially developed in the Netherlands, to guarantee a future for vintage motoring, limiting harmful emissions and any damage caused by traditional petrol to old-fashioned engines. Expected consumption is 350 liters of petrol in total for the four days of competition.

1000 miles 2022, THE STAGES

The fortieth re-enactment of the 1000 Miglia officially starts on June 15 at 1.30pm from Viale Venezia in Brescia and until June 18 the caravan will return to cross central and northern Italy in a clockwise direction. ITALIANS IN POLE POSITION

440 cars among the most beautiful and “referenced” in the world, all registered in the 1000 Miglia register, which guarantees their authenticity and above all testifies to the participation of the model in the historic edition from 1927 to 1957, followed by a special convoy of eleven military crews. And in the parterre of competing cars, seventy-one boast participation in historical editions. The Italians are the masters, with museum models, such as the nine Osca that take to the field to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the house founded by Ernesto Maserati and his brothers Bindo and Ettore 1947, about twenty Ferraris and rare Maserati in sporty trim. racing cars, in addition to the incredible Alfa Romeo models brought by foreign crews and from the historic Alfa Romeo collection: the 6C 1500 Super Sport from 1928, the 1900 Sport Spider from 1954 and the 1900 Super Sprint from 1956.

MERCEDES 300 SL PROTAGONIST

In 2022, 70 years have passed since the debut of the legendary Mercedes 300 SL, the W 194, precisely at the 1000 Miglia in 1952, in which the two racing cars took second and fourth place. Mercedes-Benz Classic will field three examples of the 300 SL Gullwing in the 2022 edition, entrusted to the drivers Karl Wendlinger, Ellen Lohr and Marcus Breitschwerdt. In the crews also the Italian driver Matteo Bobbi and the president of Mercedes-Benz Italia Radek Jelinek. Two years later, the road version, the W 198, was derived from the W 194. It had the same three-liter in-line six-cylinder engine and 215 horsepower, enough to make it reach 250 km / h, a real lightning bolt for that time.
