At the conclusion of an already disappointing rally, the France team lost against Croatia (0-1) on Monday evening at the Stade de France. The Blues, threatened with relegation to the League of Nations, worry five months before the World Cup.

The worst for the end. While she had already disappointed against Denmark (1-2), Croatia (1-1) and Austria (1-1), theFrench team finished their month of June by delivering what is not far from being their worst game of the season, against the Croats (0-1).

The Blues owed a reaction to their supporters, who had once again furnished the Stade de France and who provided a great atmosphere. Instead, they conceded from an early penalty, as Ibrahima Konaté stepped on Budimir’s foot, which allowed Luka Modric to deceive Mike Maignan (0-1, 5th). And the world champions have never managed to reply.

A baroque team

With a baroque formation, made up of many players who are usually substitutes (Konaté, Guendouzi, Kamara, etc.) and elements who did not play in their preferred positions (Koundé right back, Mbappé and Nkunku wingers), the Blues practically did not nothing showed for 45 minutes, despite some flashes of Mbappe (7th, 14th), and a reaction from… Digne, in additional time (45th + 1). The sequences of sterile ball possessions by Deschamps’ men were followed by the conservation phases of the Croatian technicians.

In the second half, the entries of Tchouaméni and Pavard (46th) brought a slight improvement, with a first strike from the future Real player (48th), a rush from Benzema (54th), and new strikes from Mbappé (55th, 61st ). But it would have taken more to worry a very solid Croatian defense, which will only tremble on a header from Konaté at the end of the effort (90th + 5), and it is the first time since November 2020 that France has finished a meeting without scoring.

The League of Nations is already lost

This end of series, just like this sequence of four matches without victory (for two points taken), can be explained by many factors: absences, fatigue of the season, the multiple changes (of players and system) that Deschamps had to operate. But that’s not reassuring just over five months from the 2022 World Cup. With Denmark’s victory against Austria (2-0), the Blues have officially lost their Nations League title, and can only play for the maintenance in Ligue A. But it’s another trophy that will have to be much better defended, in a few months…
