Holder of the title in Halle, Ugo Humbert is playing very big in the standings this week, but he started the defense of his trophy well by beating Radu Albot in three sets, which will allow him to stay very close to the Top 100.
A year ago, Ugo Humbert won the third tournament of his career, and the first ATP 500, on the lawn of Halle. Fifty-two weeks later, the Messin has a lot of pressure, because he has 500 points to defend, and he has very few in reserve. Indeed, since his triumph in the German tournament, the one who will turn 24 in two weeks has not shone on the ATP circuit (he played in the quarter-finals at the Tokyo Olympics, but that does not bring in points), with only two victories in 2021 and four in 2022. Due to injuries, covid and a bad reaction to the vaccine, Ugo Humbert struggled and here he is 50th in the standings this Monday. And in the event of a defeat this Monday in the first round in Halle against Radu Albot, he would have found himself 117th, his worst ranking since August 2018. Fortunately for the title holder, he won 6-7, 7-6, 7-5 after a fight of 2:41, and here he is virtually 101st.

Humbert saves a match point then breaks at the best moment
The French, author of 9 aces and 70% managed only one break during this match, but he arrived at the best of times: at 6-5 in the last set, which gave him the victory. In the first set, he missed four balls 4-2 and finally lost a little later in the tie-break (7-4). In the second, he saved a 5-3 ball, then missed two break points at 5-5, before saving a match point at 6-5. On the heels of this big scare, he won the tie-break 7-4. Everything was therefore decided in the last set, where no player obtained break points, until 6-5 in favor of Humbert, where Albot found himself trailing 15-40 on his serve. The Moldovan saved two match points and got himself a tie-break point, but the Frenchman finally managed to take the serve to win. So that’s a good thing done, but there’s still a long way to go in this tournament. Wednesday, we will have to beat Hubert Hurkacz or Maxime Cressy, two very big servers.
