Spain burns politeness in Portugal

Thanks to its success gleaned on Sunday against the Czech Republic (2-0), Spain snatched first place in Group 2 from Portugal in the League of Nations. The Lusitanians were beaten in Switzerland (1-0).

Destinies crossed this Sunday between Spain and Portugal. Yet at the top of pool 2 before their Sunday clash against Switzerland, the Portuguese team experienced their first defeat in this new edition of the Nations League. Spanked in the first leg, the Swiss took a short but important revenge by winning by the smallest of margins (1-0). This Lusitanian setback allows Spain to recover first place in the group thanks to its serious success over the Czech Republic (2-0).

On the lawn of the Geneva stadium, the Swiss opener was ultra-fast with a early goal from a Seferovic after a good serve from Widmer (1-0, 1st). The locals even thought they would get a penalty ten minutes later on a Portuguese hand, but the referee, helped by the VAR, finally returned to a previous fault on the Swiss side. Disappointment in the spans of the Geneva stadium, and relief for the Portuguese decided to move forward. Envy, there was some among the men of Fernando Santos. Opportunities too. And in spades during a second act totally acquired by Pepe’s partners. Sixteen shots including seven on target in the second half alone, but opposite, Omlin and the Swiss heroically resisted to offer themselves the very first victory of their selection in 2022.

Double blow for La Roja

At the same time, La Roja therefore validated their second success of the competition by overcoming a Czech Republic which had nevertheless held them in check a few days earlier (2-2). This time, the Spaniards logically won (2-0), starting with Soler’s opener (1-0, 24th). A goal in the first period, another in second, this time signed Sarabia (2-0). If the two nations had more or less the same number of chances, the difference was made on the realism for a Spain still dominating in terms of possession (72%).

After four days, Luis Enrique’s men have therefore done a double blow with this success which gives them the place of leader of group 2, with a point ahead of Portugal. Third, the Czech Republic chained a second defeat in a row and now felt the breath of the Swiss behind them since there was only one unit difference between them.
