After taking the lead in the pit stop game, Josef Newgarden held on to win the Road America Grand Prix ahead of Marcus Ericsson and Alexander Rossi. Romain Grosjean went for a good fourth place when Simon Pagenaud could not do better than twelfth.

After the oval of Texas then the streets of Long Beach, Josef Newgarden confirms he really is all-terrain in IndyCar. The Team Penske driver, who started from second on the starting grid, took his third victory of the season at the Road America Grand Prix in Wisconsin. Author of the pole position this Saturday, Alexander Rossi was able to keep the advantage at the first corner when Romain Grosjean, incisive, was able to climb from sixth to fourth place at the start. However, the race was quickly neutralized after an incident between Jimmie Johnson and Tatiana Calderon. After the neutralization, the relaunch of the race was not ideal for Alex Palou, then third, and Rinus VeeKay. Chip Ganassi Racing driver was hit by teammate Marcus Ericsson when team member Ed Carpenter Racing suffered an overly manly attack from Christian Lundgaard. As it is often said in the paddock, “the yellow flag calls the yellow flag”. A saying that was confirmed because Devlin DeFrancesco sent Will Power off the track, causing another neutralization of the race. While Romain Grosjean firmly established himself in fourth place, Simon Pagenaud did not hesitate to attack when the race was able to resume to move up to eighth place. The strategic game was set up after about fifteen rounds and, in this little game, the winner was Josef Newgarden.

Newgarden did more than hold on

The Penske driver moved into the lead ahead of Alexander Rossi when Romain Grosjean couldn’t resist a Colton Herta on soft rubber. The positions then remained established for a good while, with the rare occurrence of off-track excursions like that of Simon Pagenaud on the 22nd lap. It was at the start of the last fifteen laps that the race came back to life. While the last wave of stops allowed Romain Grosjean to regain fifth place, Pato O’Ward caused a neutralization due to the failure of the engine of his single-seater. The restart seven laps from the goal was cut short when Helio Castroneves lost control of his car, causing another neutralization. The final raise saw Josef Newgarden hold the advantage and race away to victory when Marcus Ericsson played Alexander Rossi to take second place. Romain Grosjean, meanwhile, held on to hold on to a fine fourth place despite pressure from Colton Herta. Simon Pagenaud, meanwhile, could not do better than twelfth. After giving up first place in the championship to Detroit, Marcus Ericsson took advantage of his second place to regain control. Josef Newgarden, meanwhile, takes advantage of his victories on three different grounds to pocket a bonus of a million dollars, half of which will be donated to charity. The IndyCar championship will now take a short break with the Mid-Ohio race on July 3.
