24 Hours Le Mans 2022: Toyota double in Hypercar, Porsche wins in GTE ahead of two Ferraris

The 90th edition of the endurance race crowns the two Toyotas, followed by the Glickenhaus. In Lmgte Pro Porsche toasts followed by two Ferraris. Kubica second in Lmp2. Well the beginnings of Ogier and Bortolotti.

A unique race, never predictable until the last few hours, when the endurance race turns into something very similar to a sprint test, fought on the edge of seconds, crossing the fingers so that prototypes and GT cars don’t play “jokes”. As per tradition, the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2022, edition number 90, in front of over 250,000 spectators in the stands, is confirmed as a show full of adrenaline, especially among the derivatives of the series. After 380 laps (record data) the two Hypercars Toyota Gazoo Racing triumph, dominating the entire race, with the number 8 first at the checkered flag with Brendon Hartley to collect the applause of the public, who is 2’01 ” 222 off sister car number 7. Third was Glickenhaus 007 number 709 at 5 laps. Among the Lmgte Pro first the Porsche 911 Rsr-19 number 91, with the two AF Corse Ferrari 488 Gte Evo, the 51 and the 52, which complete the triptych.

Despite some technical unforeseen events that also affected the Toyotas, in the end it is the two Hypercars of the Gazoo Racing team that finish first and second, at the end of a race that is in fact dominated. For the Japanese manufacturer this is the 5th success at Le Mans. In the last few hours the pace is dictated by the GR010 Hybrid number 8, of the crew formed by Sébastien Buemi-Brendon Hartley-Ryo Hirakawa, who in the final maintain the position with more than 2 minutes ahead of the crew of number 7 of the reigning champions Mike Conway-Kamui Kobayashi-Jose Maria Lopez. The novelty, in the “queen” category, is the Glickenhaus (American team, with cars built in Italy), for the first time in the final triptych at Le Mans: the crew of 007 number 709, formed by Ryan, enters history Briscoe-Richard Westbrook-Franck Mailleux. Fourth is the other car of the brand founded by James Glickenhaus, a film producer with a great passion for racing cars, who gave shape to the company that produces road hypercars and has the sports team as a “laboratory”. Unlucky, however, the Alpine Elf A480 – Gibson number 36, which suffered several technical problems (in particular with the clutch) from the early hours of Saturday, and in fact struggled to stay in the race with the class rivals. Alpine (which from 2024 will make its debut in the WEC endurance world championship with a completely new car, a rear-wheel drive LmdH) closes in 23rd position overall.

On the upper floors of the “cadet” class, the one reserved for Lmp2 prototypes, the main part is played by the crew on the Oreca 07 – Gibson number 38 (Jota) with Yifei Ye-Ricky Taylor-Niklas Kruetten at the wheel, who maintain the leadership for the much of the ride. Second was the excellent Italian car Prema Orlen with Robert Kubica-Louis Deletraz-Lorenzo Colombo. The other Jota, number 28, completes the podium. In Lmp2 class a positive debut for Sébastien Ogier in car number 1 (Richard Mille): the ace of the rally ends in ninth position, with Charles Milesi and Lilou Wadoux. Mirko Bortolotti’s debut at Le Mans is also more than convincing: the 1990-born Trentino driver (Lamborghini Squadra Corse official) is 11th in his class, and 15th overall on car (Team Wrt) number 32, and is the author of the best time. lap (3’30”946) of the crew, completed by Rolf Ineichen and Dreis Vanthoor.

Many emotions among the cars derived from the series in the main class, Lmgte Pro. The Chevrolet Corvette, very unlucky in the race, started from the first two boxes. First the withdrawal of the number 63 due to mechanical problems at the rear, then the accident that occurred at the number 64 – a fortuitous collision caused by the Lmp2 number 83 of AF Corse while Perrodo was at the wheel – while the American car was in command. A double knockout that favored the contenders, with the Ferrari number 51 which for several laps remained in the lead with the excellent Pier Guidi, before suffering the return of the Porsche, which showed to have greater speed. In the final hours the Porsche 911 number 91 conquers the top of the standings, with Gianmaria Bruni-Richard Lietz-Frederic Makowiecki, who gains the position on the Ferrari 488 Gte Evo number 51 of AF Corse (second at the finish line at 45”123), entrusted to reigning world champions Alessandro Pier Guidi and James Calado with Daniel Serra. Third the other car from Maranello, number 52, with Miguel Molina-Antonio Fuoco-Davide Rigon. Fourth was the Porsche 92, fifth the Ferrari 74.

24 ORE LE MANS 2022, GTE AM: THE RACE

In the Lmgte Am class, reserved for crews made up of professionals and gentlemen, the Aston Martin Vantage number 33 (TF Sport) took the victory, highlighted in the second part of the race, with the drivers Ben Keating-Marco Sorensen-Henrique Chaves; second is Porsche 911 number 79 (WeatherTech). Third is Aston number 98. The first Ferraris of the class is number 54 (AF Corse), sixth, followed in seventh position by number 85 in pink-fuchsia livery (Iron Dames) with the female crew of Michelle Gatting-Rahel Frey -Sarah Bovy, unlucky with a puncture on the first lap which lost two minutes and forced the car into a run-up race.
