Froome, the terrible image

Always paid very dearly by the Israel-Premier Tech team, Christopher Froome displays a distressing level of form on the Dauphiné.

Hope was short-lived for Christopher Froome. Lhe Briton had started to believe in a return to a good level after his 11th place in the Mercan’Tour Classic, two weeks ago. But the verdict of the Dauphiné was terrible for the quadruple winner of the Tour de France.

Froome hoped to test himself in view of the Grande Boucle (“I just want to do the maximum, see where I stand on longer climbs, compared to the other guys too”), especially during the two mountain stages on the Saturday and weekend programme. But the former Sky rider will not see the slightest pass in the Alps. He gave up this Saturday morning, when he “Hasn’t been feeling well for two days”according to its Israel-Premier Tech team.

Froome dropped on the dish

It was seen: Friday, Froome was released… on a flat part. The image is terrible, and almost pathetic. While there were still more than 100 riders in the peloton, the Briton was unclamped, rallying Gap five minutes behind the best. The native of Nairobi had thus fallen to 76th place in the general classification.

As we know, Froome is no longer the same runner since his serious fall during the recognition of the Dauphiné time trial three years ago. He is always bad and it is a big problem for his team. The Israeli formation cannot count on the 37-year-old Briton, who receives more than 5 million euros (one of the highest salaries in the peloton), and does not bring him any results. This is all the more problematic since Israel-Premier Tech is fighting to ensure its maintenance in the World Tour, and only points to 20th place in the ranking established by the UCI, when it is necessary to finish in the 18 first.

No Tour for Froome?

Under these conditions, one wonders if the Israeli team will take its highest paid rider to try to support Jakob Fuglsang and Michael Woods on the Tour de France. In the middle of the week, Froome also recognized that he was not sure of being at the start of the Grande Boucle. “No, I have no guarantees at all, for anything else. I think everything is on hold, especially because of the points situation to stay in the World Tour, which will undoubtedly induce a change of strategy in the team. »
