British driver Lewis Hamilton, resident of the Mercedes team and seven-time Formula 1 world champion, spoke to L’Equipe, in particular concerning his current season but also his retirement.
He obviously doesn’t want to retire yet. British driver Lewis Hamilton, resident of the Mercedes team, confided in the French sports daily The Team, in its edition this Saturday, on the sidelines of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, near Baku. The seven-time Formula 1 world champion has notably indicated that he wishes to continue his career in the discipline. A strong decision, after in particular the end of the 2021 season, which saw the Dutchman Max Verstappen, resident of the Red Bull team, steal the title from him of world champion. As well as his difficulties encountered since the start of this new exercise, driving his Mercedes, marked by the rebound of his single-seater: “Of course, there is the rebound. It is not pleasant. There are also these new tires but I would say that what bothers me the most is the entry into the corners. Because of the rebound, I can no longer attack the rope as frankly as before. I’ve always driven like this, very aggressive on corner entry. There, with these undulations, I constantly have to step back (…) I’m not looking for an excuse, I just want to understand. We’ll get there and when we get there, I’ll be back. »
No world champion title this year?
Last year, Hamilton was in the race for the title, until the very last minutes of the final race. A title which would then have been his eighth, but that would not necessarily have prompted him to leave the paddocks afterwards: “I don’t think so. I’m not one to focus on a number. Driving is my passion. Eight titles wouldn’t have changed my life. I don’t see myself leaving for a title…” And this season, the Briton does not seem to be making the title of world champion a possibility: ” I do not think so. Over a season with around twenty races, there are already many past. Mathematically, it is still possible. But honestly, I am absolutely not in this state of mind. I just want to get back to the top, to make the team able to win races again. Take the Grands Prix one after the other. Bringing the team back to the top is hard enough, so thinking about the title is way too far removed from my current concerns. »
