Stuttgart: Murray offers himself Tsitsipas!

The shock of the quarter-finals of the ATP tournament in Stuttgart saw the victory of Andy Murray, always comfortable on the grass, against Stefanos Tsitsipas, who appreciates him much less. He will face Nick Kyrgios, who took advantage of the abandonment of Marton Fucsovics.

Andy Murray is still there! While he celebrated his 35th birthday in May, the Scottish player, not spared from injuries in recent years, offered himself a prestigious victory this Friday in the quarter-finals of the Stuttgart tournament. The world No. 68 beat No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas, whom he faced for the second time in his career (the Greek won in five sets at the last US Open), 7-6 , 6-3 in 1h39. The former world No. 1 was very solid on serve. Author of 5 aces (for a single double-fault) and 66% of first serves, he saved the only break point that Tsitsipas got, which was in fact a set point, at 6-5 in the first sleeve.

The first games of the match were very fast, and Murray had a first chance to break at 3-3. Missed opportunity, as for the Greek at 6-5. Everything was therefore played in the decisive game, where Murray was the most solid, winning 7-4. The second set was easier for the Scot, who broke at 3-2, then got two match points at 5-2, before winning at 5-3. He thus signs his first victory over a Top 5 player since his victory over Novak Djokovic in the final of the 2016 Masters, when he was at the height of his glory.

And now, Kyrgios!

In the semi-final, his first since Sydney at the very start of the season, Andy Murray will face another player who has played very little on clay to better prepare the turf, Nick Kyrgios. The Australian took advantage of the abandonment of Marton Fucsovics for an as yet undetermined reason. He then led 7-6, 3-0 after 52 minutes of play. Author of 6 aces and 59% of first serves, Kyrgios (78th in the world) did not have the slightest break point to defend during this game against the 55th in the world. He missed a break point at 5-4 in the first set, which was decided in the tiebreak. A decisive game that the Australian easily won 7-3.

On his way, he broke at 2-0 in the second set, and his opponent then decided to throw in the towel. For him too, it will be a second semi-final this season, after the one played on Houston soil in April, for his last tournament played. Murray leads 5-1 in his meetings against Kyrgios, but on grass the record is 1-1. It is in any case a very enticing half that the spectators of Stuttgart will attend on Saturday!
