Qatar 2022: Italy drafted?

Eliminated without glory during the play-offs, Italy could finally participate in the World Cup in Qatar. Consequence of the exclusion of one of the qualified nations.

Ecuador is shaking. While qualifying for the fourth time in its history at a World Cup, the tricolor could ultimately be excluded from the Qatari World Cup. Consequence of the false papers presented by the defender Byron Castillo to justify his Ecuadorian nationality. Contrary to what he claimed, the right side would indeed be born in Ecuador to Ecuadorian parents.

Best-placed Chile

According to Marca, FIFA should announce this Friday the exclusion of Ecuador, placed in the draw in Group A alongside Qatar, the Netherlands and Senegal. But the question arises concerning the identity of the nation to replace Ecuador. The best placed seems to be Chile, seventh in the playoffs in the Amsud zone but which would go back to fourth place if the Tricolor loses on green carpet the meetings in which Byron Castillo participated. This is the sanction imposed in 2016 against Bolivia when it appeared that the Bolivian international Nelson Cabrera, aligned twice in the playoffs, had already played with Paraguay.

The FIFA ranking to save Italy?

The other solution would be to simply exclude Ecuador, which would allow Peru to qualify directly and Colombia to recover the place of play-off. But another possibility is mentioned on the other side of the Alps: the place left vacant could indeed be attributed to Italy, eliminated from the dams in the Europe zone by Macedonia. Consequence of its good FIFA ranking. The international body could indeed be tempted to reserve this ticket for the non-qualified nation best positioned in the ranking. A status vested in the Nazionale, reigning European champion and sixth nation in the world.
