The German Oscar Otte created a surprise at the Stuttgart tournament by taking out the No. 4 seed, Denis Shapovalov, in two tie-breaks. Qualification also of Lorenzo Sonego.
It hasn’t been going well for Denis Shapovalov since his success on May 12 in Rome against Rafael Nadal, in the conditions that we know (the Spaniard suffered from foot pain). The Canadian player has not won a match since that day! Beaten in the quarter-finals in Rome by Ruud, then from the outset in Geneva (by Ivashka) and at Roland-Garros (by Rune), the world No. 16 also lost on his big debut on grass, at stuttgart. It was the German Oscar Otte, 61st in the world, who offered himself a prestigious victory, beating him in two tie-breaks and 1h39: 8-6 then 7-4. Quite brilliant in service (6 aces and 66% of first serves for Otte, 12 aces and 68% for Shapovalov), the two players only lost their face-off once: 1-1 in the first set for the Canadian, and at 4-3 for the German. If “Shapo” then obtained a set point at 5-4, it was in the tie-break that this round ended, with a score of 8-6 in favor of Otte. No break point to report, however, in the second set, where the German player once again won the decisive game: 7-4. It is therefore he who will face the last Frenchman in the running, Benjamin Bonzi, for a place in the last four (1-0 for the German in the confrontations), while Shapovalov will now take the path of Queen’s.
One time for the home crowd 🇩🇪🙌

An Italian in the last four
Oscar Otte is the last German player in the draw, as Jan-Lennard Struff has left. Opposed to the seeded No. 6 Lorenzo Sonego, he also lost in two tie-breaks and 1h49 of play: 7-2 then 7-4. There was no break point in this encounter, the Italian having none to defend and the German saving the only one his opponent got. The world No. 32 proved to be the strongest in the decisive games, which he won quite easily. There will inevitably be an Italian in the last four, since Sonego will be opposed to his illustrious compatriot Matteo Berrettini in the quarter-finals.
