MotoGP, Ducati and the World Championship. Ciabatti: "He's not lost yet. Race Direction, something needs to be changed"

The sporting director of Ducati Corse: “What a disappointment at Montmelò, Pecco would have fought for the victory in MotoGP. Spencer and the Stewards who are not very transparent, we do not feel protected. Quartararo is very good, instead of Miller, Oliveira or Rins”

Accidents, mistakes, important escapes, misfortunes… We saw all the colors on Sunday at Montmelò and, unfortunately for the Italian colors, things did not go exactly as we would have expected. From the retirement of Dennis Foggia in Moto3 for the jump of the chain, to the accident triggered at the start of the MotoGP by Takaaki Nakagami who with a ‘waterfall’ got rid of Francesco Bagnaia and Alex Rins, triggering a mountain of controversy over the way the situation was badly managed by the Race Direction; from the second fall in a row of Enea Bastianini to the sensational mistake with which Aleix Espargaro said goodbye to a great second place for him and for Aprilia, ending with the clear success of Fabio Quartararo. Speaking about all this together with Paolo Ianieri and Zoran Filicic in the week-long episode of MotoG-Podcast, is Paolo Ciabatti, Ducati’s sporting director. “We were coming from the beautiful victory at Mugello with Pecco and were aiming for another 20-25 points. The disappointment was great because it was a race that we had prepared very well, I believe that Pecco had the opportunity to fight with Fabio until the end for the victory “begins to tell the 64-year-old manager from Turin who is passionate about flying:” I have two dreams, to overcome the sound barrier aboard a fighter, and then conquer a pilots title ”.

opaque stewards

The accident changed everything, with everyone’s finger pointing after the race against Freddie Spencer and the other GP Stewards, for the way they operated and for the failure to sanction the Japanese driver of Lucio Cecchinello. “This is not the first time that final decisions have been made that cause a lot of discontent. We would need more transparency and attention, because we have seen too many times situations that have been evaluated in a manner and with criteria that escape us. For six years I have led the Superbike Race Direction and I know that it is a difficult job where you can make mistakes. But there are two ways to operate: if an episode concerns drivers who are still in the race, you have to decide immediately. As, for example, it did not happen last year in Barcelona when Quartararo ran with his suit open in the final and the penalty was imposed only afterwards. But if, as in the case of Sunday, all three drivers are out of the race, there is no need to decide immediately. Spencer and the Stewards had to better analyze what happened, perhaps even asking the LCR team for telemetry data to see when he had braked, and how Nakagami. Fortunately, he did not get hurt ”.

something needs to be changed

The pilots said they no longer had faith in these Stewards, asking for a change. And what will the houses do? “It would take a humility and transparency that are not there now – continues Ciabatti -. The riders have the opportunity to talk about it in the Safety Commission with Carmelo Ezpeleta and his son Carlos, but at this point it is clear that we Constructors will also talk about it at MSMA ”. To replace Spencer, as everyone is now clamoring for, “is not a decision of the manufacturers or the drivers, but it is clear that at this point something has to change: I don’t know if the people or the way in which the price is managed, but we don’t feel protected “.

still wets fighting

Returning to the track, Ciabatti reiterates that the World Championship is not yet closed: “There are 11 races left, Fabio is very good and Aprilia is having really positive results. But that’s not all. Objectively, we have lost important opportunities, such as Pecco’s at Le Mans, and with what happened on Sunday we have at least 40 points less. But we have the possibility to fight for the victory or the podium in every race, the accounts are made in the end. Quartararo must be acknowledged for being an exceptional rider, he is the only one who uses Yamaha, Franco and Andrea (Morbidelli and Dovizioso; ed) unfortunately are in embarrassing positions. Hats off to Fabio, because if he weren’t there, we would talk about Yamaha in other terms ”.

between bastianini and martin …

Finally, a joke also on the drivers market: “Our goal was to have both Bastianini and Martin for the next two seasons, and we have achieved it. Having both an identical economic and technical treatment, we took it until the end of August to decide on the teams they will race in. And I don’t think this puts too much pressure on either of them. Meanwhile, with Miller leaving (at KTM; ed), it is no mystery that Oliveira is one of the more serious candidates, but we are also talking to Rins ”.
