Liv Golf, instructions for a new circuit

Who is involved in these tournaments?

Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Sergio García, Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, Graeme McDowell or Martin Kaymer (both winners of the US Open and the French Open) are among the renowned surnames officially engaged. It is whispered insistently that Bryson DeChambeau or Patrick Reed should follow them shortly.

However, the field of 48 players is still far from the standards of the PGA Tour. It currently only includes 27 members of the world’s Top 150, illustrious unknowns and even a few amateurs. Note that none of the current top 10 in the world is in the running and that Tiger Woods himself was reluctant to take part in these events despite the generous sums promised.

No French will be at the start of this first event even if a few French players, including Grégory Havret, had requested an invitation.

Who finances these new tests?

It is the Saudi funds that are injecting the vast majority of the hundreds of millions of dollars into this Tour via the PIF (sovereign fund of the kingdom). Saudi Arabia’s desire is to significantly increase its influence via the sports sphere and in fact golf. The kingdom had thus been organizing the Saudi International since 2019, an event at the time on the European Tour calendar. But quickly, with the arrival of Greg Norman at the head of the Liv Golf entity in 2020, the idea of a more complete calendar was put in place with in the end these eight events. Eight tournaments will take place this year across the globe (including the United States) before increasing to 15 events in 2023.

20 millions

Each event of the Liv International Series has a prize money of 20 million green tickets, more than all the Major tournaments… The winner receiving 4 million and the last ranked $120,000.

Why is this Tour controversial?

The Saudi kingdom organized its first golf event only a few months after the Jamal Khashoggi affair and its desire to open up via this sports washing operation took a serious blow in terms of credibility. But it is above all the battle between the PGA Tour, the European Tour and the officials of Liv Golf that has hit the headlines in recent months. The challenge: to keep the best players, the main players in these circuits.

But the Saudis took out the checkbook and literally paid hundreds of millions for some of the big names in London this week. In short, what angers the main bodies of the game is the disruptive nature of the circuit set up by Liv Golf. History and the legacy of the game are clearly not at the center of this project based on a notion of pure business by franchise.

What are the committed players risking?

Those who have already returned their PGA Tour card (Garcia, Johnson, Mickelson…) do not fear any sanction on this side. On the other hand, the American Tour should suspend for a long period (we are talking about several years) the players who are still members of the circuit taking part in the first LIV tournament.

The European Tour is more discreet about the potential sanctions imposed on its dissident members, but the shadow of a Ryder Cup ban hovers without being proven. On the Major side, if the US Open will not close its doors to committed players, it is increasingly rumored that the Masters could ban renegades from its club. Dustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia, Charl Schwartzel or Patrick Reed, all former winners at Augusta are part of it.

What game formula is used?

The idea of these Liv Golf invitational Series is to offer a more dynamic golf experience. The tournaments will not be held over four rounds, as the usual norm is, but only three days. A departure in shotgun will launch all the players, spread over the holes of the course, at the same time. No cut will be to be feared since all the players play the three rounds and the participants will even play as a team. Twelve formations have thus been built around as many captains, who are of course the big names involved in history.

Where to see these tests?

This is the good news in these troubled times for pro golf: no need to go far since the Live Team will broadcast the eight rounds of the Liv Invitational Golf Series in full and live.
