The Blues in June, it has been less good since the start of the Didier Deschamps era

With the international window of the League of Nations returns the famous debate of the end of season matches of the Blues. Let the French team mess up, with a defeat against Denmark (1-2) then a draw with a reshuffled team in Croatia on Monday (1-1), and then we curse the calendar and this month of June where organizations are at their wit’s end. This does not prevent certain selections from winning matches… Neither UEFA and FIFA organize most of these meetings during this period, with the exception of the next World Cup (November 21-18). December 2022).

In June, Deschamps is 54.2% of victories

Since Didier Deschamps became coach, after the final defeat of the Laurent Blanc era… in June during Euro 2012, June is the month when the Blues have played the most: 35 matches, followed by October (21 ), September and November (20), March (18). They are partly responsible for this since they qualified for all the final stages which usually start at this time.

Over these five months, all competitions combined, the French team earns less in June (54.2%) than in September and November (65%), March (72%) and October (76.1%). Over his entire tenure Deschamps has 83 wins in 128 games (64.8%).

33.3% wins in odd years…

If we limit ourselves to seasons without Euro or World Cup, the victory rate of the Blues in June drops to 33.3% (4 wins, 1 draw, 7 losses)… It even started very badly in 2013 , with a friendly tour in South America that ended in two defeats (0-1 in Uruguay then 0-3 in Brazil), and in 2015 with two more friendly losses (3-4 against Belgium then 0-1 in Albania) .

As if the men of Deschamps were less motivated at the dawn of summer, when there is no major issue. But they also lost two out of three qualifying matches, 1-2 in Sweden in 2017 on the road to the 2018 World Cup and 0-2 in Turkey in 2019 for Euro 2020 (only victory in Andorra in 2019, 4-0) .

…Before DD, it was 81.2%

33.3%, the statistic is low. It is even more cruel for the teammates of Hugo Lloris when we compare the Deschamps era to the previous ones of the 21st century. Between 2001 and 2011, during odd years, the Blues of Roger Lemerre, Jacques Santini, Raymond Domenech and Laurent Blanc won 13 of their 16 meetings in June (1 draw, 2 losses), or 81.2%. But what fans expect above all, and what history remembers, are the victories in July, during major international tournaments. And there, Deschamps rarely disappoints (71.4%, 5 wins for 2 losses). Next time, December is the time to shine.
