Sakkari easy, Raducanu gives up

Seeded n°1 in Nottingham, Maria Sakkari started her tournament well, with a victory in two sets over Camila Osorio. Qualification also of the seeded n°3, Camila Giorgi. The darling of the public, Emma Raducanu, on the other hand, was forced to abandon.

She had a huge shot to play at Roland-Garros, finding herself at the bottom of the table, where Ons Jabeur, Barbora Krejcikova, Garbine Muguruza or even Anett Kontaveit had been eliminated. But Maria Sakkari also lost prematurely, in the second round against Karolina Muchova. The Greek, world No. 5, decided to return to the circuit quickly, and she requested a wild card from the organizers of the Nottingham grass tournament, where she is seeded No. 1. And Sakkari, not really comfortable on this surface (two third rounds at Wimbledon for better results), did not tremble on her debut, with a 6-2, 6-3 victory in 1h14 against the world n ° 61 Camila Osorio, eliminated by Diane Parry at Roland-Garros. The Greek notably served 8 aces and was only broken once, when she was leading 3-1 in the first set. But she won three games in a row to take the first set, then broke again at 4-2 in the second to win this match, and go face Canadian Rebecca Marino in the next round.

Giorgi, Zhang and Linette in straight sets as well

The No. 3 seed, Camila Giorgi, also qualified on Tuesday. The Italian beat British guest Sonay Kartal 6-4, 6-3 in 1:19, despite 7 double faults and 44% first serves. In this match marked by eight breaks, Giorgi had the last word by taking the opposing service at 5-4 in the first set, then quickly leading 5-1 in the second, before concluding without trembling. She will face another Briton in the next round: Harriet Dart. It also goes for the No. 4 seed, Shuai Zhang, who beat Spanish qualifier Cristina Bucsa 7-6, 6-3 in 1:22, in a match with six breaks, and who will face Briton Burrage. Qualification also of Magda Linette (n°8), who won the 100% Polish match against Katarzyna Kawa with the score of 7-6, 6-2 in 1h37, after being down 3-1 in the first set. Next opponent: the Czech Martincova.

Raducanu gives up

Since her surprise triumph at the US Open last year, Emma Raducanu had not had the opportunity to play in front of her audience. But the joy was short-lived… Seeded n°2 in Nottingham, the 19-year-old Briton was forced to retire against Viktorija Golubic. She called in the physio for a rib massage, apparently, then threw in the towel as the Swiss led 4-3 in the first set, after 32 minutes of play and five breaks. Less than three weeks from Wimbledon, there is no doubt that Raducanu does not want to take any risks. But the fact remains that it has been twelve tournaments played since her triumph in New York and that she has only played in two quarter-finals (in Cluj-Napoca and Stuttgart).
