The blue, making his seasonal debut on grass, struggled at the beginning but then dominated by the French thanks to the serve. Musetti and Berrettini are also expected to debut
Just over 24 hours have passed since the Roland Garros final which saw Rafa Nadal triumph for the fourteenth time in his career, and it was already time to change surfaces. Lorenzo Sonego, engaged in the first round of the “Boss Open”, Atp 250 tournament in progress Stuttgart, inaugurated his season on the grass with an agile victory over the French Benoit Paire (n. 80 Atp), imposing himself with a score of 7 -5 6-2, at the end of an hour and 17 minutes of play. In the next round the 27 year old n. 32 of the ranking (and sixth favorite of the seeding) will meet the home wild card Jan-Lennard Struff (n.103 Atp), winner of the match against the American Marcos Giron (n.53 Atp) for 7-5 5-7 7- 6 (8).
It is not the brightest start for both players, who lose their service at the opening by committing a double foul on each side. In the fifth game, an inspired Paire with the most varied solutions goes on for 3-2 while Sonego, in difficulty, collects too little with the first for his standards (just 44% of points scored). However, the Frenchman does and undoes and one step away from the closing of the set (at 5-4), he leaves the door open to the blue who does not forgive any kind of distraction. This is followed by 3 consecutive games for Lorenzo who avoids any chance of a tie-break and strikes Paire 7-5.
The second set is soon tinged with blue: Sonego finds the support of his service friend, as well as confidence, (12/13 points with the first) and takes the 3-1 break. Meanwhile Paire, after the tumble of the previous set, appears increasingly confused and listless and his right seems to no longer want to know to enter. The inexorable collapse of the Frenchman thus follows a decisive double break for Sonego, who declares the end of the games in the eighth game thanks to a resounding 6-2.
“It’s not easy to go from clay to grass but I love playing here”, Sonego’s comments at the end of the match. “If I serve well I know I can get good results on this surface. Paire is difficult to play, he is an extraordinary talent, he plays well on grass and has a great touch, but today it was easier in the second set. The next round with Struff will be tough, he plays at home, but I’ll think about enjoying the moment. ”
The other Italy
On the scoreboard in Stuttgart there are two other Azzurri: Lorenzo Musetti and Matteo Berrettini. The twenty-year-old from Carrara, fresh winner of the Forlì Challenger, will make his debut on Tuesday against the Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili, n.26 in the world ranking and fifth seed. For the two it is the first clash in their career. Then there are fewer and fewer days that separate us from the return of Matteo Berrettini, n. 2 of the scoreboard, which is missing from the American hardcourt competitions (16 March, Indian Wells round of 16). The 2021 Wimbledon finalist, fresh from an intervention on his right hand, will benefit from a bye in the first round before entering the race in the second round against the winner of the match between the qualifier Radu Albot (n.121 Atp) and the Portuguese Joao Sousa (63 Atp).
