Introduce yourself…

I am Sonny Carey, I am currently 18 years old and play for Kings Lynn Town FC in the National League North.

How important is football for you?

Football is very important to me as I’ve been playing the game ever since I was 4 years old. Football runs in my family and I have always had a great passion for the game ever since a young age. It’s all I’ve ever wanted to do since I was a kid.

How do you prepare for an (important) match? (music, rituals, etc.)

I always listen to music before matches especially away games! I like to keep myself well hydrated before a match and have a good pre match meal beforehand.

Sonny, you started your career by Norwich City FC. How long have you played football there? And how did you experience these periods?

I was picked up by Norwich City at the age of 8 and stayed there until I was 16 years old where I got released. I had many great experiences during my time at Norwich, including many tournaments abroad in countries like Germany, Italy, France and many more. I was selected to be in the schoolboys programme at age 12 where I moved schools twice in order to be able to train every day.

After your time at Norwich City FC you have played trails by Oxford United and Cambridge United. Did you noticed a lot of difference between these clubs ?

There wasn’t too much differences between the clubs, they all looked to play football and keep the ball on the ground. The link between the first team and the youth team at Cambridge United was a lot better and closer than at Norwich and I liked this.

During the 2018-19 season you was selected for the England Colleges FA national team. Were you surprised?

Being selected for England colleges was a great achievement and experience. We played games at St George’s park and played in a tournament out in Italy where I managed to score 2 goals in 3 games. I had to get through 3 phases of trials all over the country and was lucky enough to be selected in the 18 man group to represent the country.

What is the most important football lesson you have learned and who taught you that?

The most important piece of advice I have been given was by Ricky Martin at my time at Norwich when he told me to ‘build bridges and relationships with managers’ you never know you might be playing for a manager at a certain time and they might get a move to a bigger club and if you’ve impressed them they may take you with them.

What is your best moment in your football career?

There isn’t 1 moment that stands out but I do love scoring a last minute winner! There’s no better feeling then scoring in the 90th minute to win the game!

Sonny, who is your biggest inspiration?

I would have to say my Dad! He (and my mother) come to all my games and support me all over the country. They have always supported me and inspired me to be the best I can be and give it my all. He always tells me to keep my head down and work hard and I’ll get to where I want to be.

What are your personal goals this season?

I set myself a target at the start of the season to score 10 goals. I’m on 4 at the moment and feel confident that I can reach this goal and maybe even score more!
