Introduce yourself…

My name is Sam Smart and I am 21 years old and play for Eastleigh FC. I am from just outside of Portsmouth and have been playing football ever since I could walk.

How important is football to you?

Football is very important to me because It has been my passion all my life and couldn’t see myself doing anything else.

How do you prepare for an (important) competition? (music, rituals, etc.)

The night before a game I will always chill which could be watching Netflix or playing Fifa or even have a little pamper with the Mrs hahaha! Also, if I’m starting the game I always have to walk out last ( not sure why just always done it )

What are your specific qualities as a football player?

I would say my specific qualities as a footballer would be my pace, dribbling 1v1s and finishing because being a winger I feel like these are the main 3 aspects which is why I always make sure I do extras after training to make sure I’m always staying on top of these and to also get better as player.

Who are the most important people within football environment?

I’d have to say for me the most important people within football are of course my team mates, within training you naturally form a close bond with them which works great on and off pitch. I also feel my teammates help me to improve as they have more experience of higher levels of football which I can learn from.

In the youth did you play for Basingstoke Town FC. How was your time there?

I played for Basingstoke for 2 years before moving to Eastleigh FC but prior this I started playing football for my local team Denmead at the age of 3/4 then joined numerous local teams over the years which landed me a place at Portsmouth in the community development team. Whilst being at Pompey I also played men’s football for Horndean which defiantly helped me to progress.

Sam, you became a Eastleigh FC player in July 2019. How were you welcomed at Eastleigh FC?

From the start the club were extremely welcoming, luckily for me I already knew Jason Bristow from Basingstoke and a few of the players. Upon signing my contract the team posted about me on their social media which I feel welcomed me with the fans.

Who is your biggest inspiration?

In regards to football I’d have to say my biggest inspiration is Lionel Messi as from a young age I have looked up to him in his style of football, wether that be watching his matches or videos of him on YouTube before games as motivation.

What is your ambition in your football career?

Of course the dream would be to play in the premier league and appear in the World Cup but realistically football is a hard game and industry so I hope to play as high as I can!

What are your personal goals this season?

Every season I always set goal and assist targets which this year is 10 goals 10 assists as it’s my first year playing in this league. I also hope to get as many minutes as I can in hope that it betters my game and skills.
